NIHU’s “Northeast Asia Area Studies” Research Project (FY 2016 – 2021)
For the period 2016 – 2021, National Institutes for the Humanities (NIHU) manages a network-based “Northeast Asia Area Studies” research project. Under the theme “Regional Structure and Its Changes in Northeast Asia: In Search of the Way to Coexist from the Point of View of Transborderism”, the project seeks to explore mechanisms of coexistence in Northeast Asia through mapping out political, economic, environmental and social dimensions of transborderism. Within the framework of the project, WICCS research focuses on neighboring countries’ responses to China’s rise.

Report on Research Activities(2018~)
Waseda Institute of Contemporary Chinese Studies (WICCS) has continued to engage in China-related research in areas including Chinese politics, foreign policy, economics and society. The Institute seeks to enhance academic cooperation with other key China-focused research institutes in Japan and abroad, and to effectively disseminate the Institute’s research findings to the global society.
In addition to the WICCS monograph series, the Institute’s publishing activities encompass the publication of an academically peer-reviewed “Journal of Contemporary East Asia Studies” (JCEAS). The journal (hosted on Taylor & Francis online) comes out bi-annually and is available online at: https://www.tandfonline.com/loi/reas20.
FY2017 Annual Report
In the 2017-2018 academic year, Waseda Institute of Contemporary Chinese Studies (WICCS) continued to engage in China-related research in areas including Chinese politics, foreign policy, economics and society. The Institute sought to enhance academic cooperation with other key China-focused research institutes in Japan and internationally and to effectively disseminate the Institute’s research findings to a global scientific community.
As a member of the National Institute for the Humanities (NIHU) “Northeast Asia Area Studies” Project (FY 2016 – 2021), the Institute continues to conduct innovative research on neighbouring countries’ responses to China’s rise. As part of the Project, WICCS co-sponsored (with Toyama University Center for Far Eastern Studies) International Symposium titled “Korean Peninsula: The Key to Northeast Asia’s Security?” held on 8thDecember 2017 at Waseda University.
Throughout the 2017-2018 academic year, the Institute participated in numerous academic events held at Waseda and in Asia, including International Conference on the topic of “Assessing Social and Economic Risk in China” held on 16th – 18thNovember 2017 at Sungkyunkwan University (South Korea) and International Workshop on the topic of “One Belt One Road Initiative and Southeast Asia” held on 5thFebruary 2018 at Waseda University.

NIHU’s “Contemporary Chinese Area Studies” Research Project (FY 2007 – 2016)
During the period between 2007 and 2016, WICCS served as the project headquarters to NIHU’s network-based “Contemporary Chinese Area Studies” research project. With an aim of mapping out China’s remarkable rise to superpowers status, in the first phase of the project (FY 2007-2011), WICCS research focused on the sustainability of China’s development, while in the second phase (FY 2012-2016), the Institute conducted interdisciplinary research covering all aspects related to China’s rise as a global power.
